Playwright Matthew López made Tony Award history when his epic work The Inheritance was announced as Best Play., becoming the first Latino to ever win this fabled prize.
It fills me with cultural pride to see this happen at long last. More, it validates the importance of encouraging other Latinos to pursue careers in the arts, in all disciplines. Our stories account for much of the nation’s identity, that we are little seen on stage or screen is beyond a shame. We can do it. The industry needs to do better. We all need to do better in seizing opportunities, too.
